I also wanted to allow the "reader" to "zoom" in on the data and explore particular patterns for particular time periods. D3 makes this possible without too much work. Click on the image below and you'll be taken to an example that utilizes a "zoom" function so that you can delve into the data a bit more fully and compare curves.
I have since incorporated the mouse-over and the zoom functions into a single figure examining temperature fluctuations recorded for ~2 years from one of our field sites using iButton data loggers.
